Lynn this is great! I really hate Spirit Airlines but I think I love the business. This is the first one of these that I’ve read where I could really see how the operations model actually changes customer behavior and supports the business model. Awesome profile, really learned a lot!
Boom! Nicely done Steven. Very interesting to read the different levers of the HBS business model and actually think about the way the unique HBS classroom experience and pedagogical principles actually reinforce things like students’ willingness to donate and teachers’ relationships with students who they may be able to leverage later to write cases. I agree that the business model and operating model at HBS are well aligned and look forward to seeing what the school does to continue this alignment in the face of the future risks you called out at the end.
Samsonite is a very interesting company. I recently bought some new luggage and I had no idea how expensive these things could be. I wonder what COGS are for Samsonite and how that compares to their competitors. I decided to go with luggage with a bit more of a reputation for quality and durability than I think Samsonite has and that came at a higher price tag, but I wonder if Samsonite might be just as high quality but better operations allows them to offer lower price?
