What concerns me more than the fake news is the fact that Facebook’s algorithm is selecting which news to send to each users based on higher click-through-rates and share-rates.
This goes against the company’s mission “to discover what’s going on in the world”, given that diversity of opinions won’t be viewed / discussed simply because few people share this opinion. Is this true access to information?
My question here is – how can facebook make sure that its users have access not only to accurate information, but also to diverse information?

Although Otis seems to be moving the right direction, I am quite skeptical about the company’s ability to collect and process the amount of data, in order to come up with key conclusions. More precisely, this sounds like a very high investment, which makes me question if it will ever payback.
On the contrary, once the above is resolved. this is indeed an amazing revolution for even more data mining, which could potentially assist Otis to better cater specific customers (e.g. specific details on usage of elevators). Using this, Otis can better design the elevators to proactively fight common defects.

Love your article! It is about time that our utility companies start to introduce technology to decrease the overall cost for them and their consumers. One part that is not clear to me is how the smart meters would help FPL identify and reduce electricity theft. Electricity theft is pretty much taking power from the grid in an unauthorized manner, very poorly done. NYC experienced a fairly large explosion in 2015 due to a electricity theft. I think overall this is a big problem that could be addressed through a smart meter mechanism but I am not clear how FPL would address it with their system.
I loved your article! I like how technology is making zoos more accessible to people. I think in addition to entertainment and raising donations, the cameras can be used to track and study animal behavior in order to improve their overall care. The zoo could even educate those watching the live feeds about potential signs of sickness and report those back to the zoo (sort of crowdsourcing their care). Doing so could further drive engagement as well as donations for care.
Really interesting post. I agree with you that the region could significantly benefit economically speaking from global warming. However, I am concern for the impact that an increase in visitors and shipping traffic would have on the bio diversity of the region. I would be interesting in learning how US regulations may protect the local bio-diversity and also help the local economy.
This was fascinating! I may start shopping at H&M! While I applaud their efforts, I wonder what is the environmental impact of recycling clothes. The 20% that gets recycled would need to be re-treated, which may decrease its positive environmental impact. Furthermore, what happens to the clothes that can’t be recycled? Does the company simply destroyed them? If so, the overall impact of this specific strategy may not be very significant. However, a something is better than nothing even if it is just to bring more consumers into the stores…
Great post! I didn’t realize that even ice cream companies could be impacted by global warming! It is fascinating that B&J could also benefit from global warming. However, as you pointed in your article, customers tend to spend more with companies who are socially conscious. Therefore, on an overall basis, isn’t it more beneficial for the firm to take a socially responsible approach? I also think that B&J is trying to create a brand that takes a stand, similar to what Dove did, in order to differentiate themselves from competitors. However, as other ice cream companies start to do the same I wonder if B&J will continue to spend as much on this effort.
Great article! We definitely have a need for alternative power sources. However, I think this type of initiatives would probably face a lot of public resistance given the perceived safety risks, especially after recent accidents in nuclear power plants. Should TerraPower be concerned about the perceived risks? How should they educate consumers of the improved safety of nuclear power?
Great post! I completely agree with you in regards to the hotel industry needing to do more in order to minimize their negative environmental impact. However, I am curious about the impact that some of the operational initiatives have on the work force of the hotels. For instance, Starwood has an initiative in which guests get points if they cancel room cleaning. Therefore, as a result of this initiative, Starwood reduced its personnel costs. For investors this is probably a great outcome but for the local community that supplies the labor it may not be so great. So I wonder if there is a way to balance green initiatives with their potential social impact…
Great article! I completely agree with you regarding the need to introduce meat substitutes in the fast food industry. However, Shake Shack is probably concern about consumers’ perception of lab developed meat. Consumers, like myself, would need to be educated as to any potential side effects of a lab grown burger. Perhaps a more feasible plan would be to introduce a vegetarian based burger and slowly move the consumer based to a more novel product.
