Great article! My worry with this approach stems from my understanding of the Theranos situation. John Carreyrou, the author of Bad Blood, points out that the investigation of Theranos originally stemmed from suspicion that an relatively uneducated drop-out could develop breakthrough technology at such a young age and with such little experience. Does this leave Pfizer open to a fool’s errand, chasing investments that turn out to be flops? Do they over-commit to these new ideas and throw away good money on research? Time will tell. Thanks!

Great article. Additive manufacturing in aerospace is an incredibly interesting field because it allows designers to optimize design for weight and performance, but the amount of time required to produce parts goes up significantly. To answer your question regarding revenue loss due to the increase in durable components – I think that that revenue loss if offset by a decreased inventory carrying cost. Companies may not need to hold certain spare parts inventory at all if they are manufactured using 3D printing. The parts can be made Just In Time. There is also the elimination of set up costs times to produce certain parts if they were otherwise dormant. Thanks!

Great article! I am a huge fan of Nike so it is great to learn that they are innovating in this space using this technology. My question is around capacity of 3D printers. 3D printing is an incredibly time consuming process. Even if they are able to improve efficiency to the point that they are cost competitive using 3D printing – will they be able to meet customer demand for mass products? What happens when they have a hit product for which demand sky-rockets? Interesting topic, thanks!

This is a great article. Thanks for sharing. I think their main competitors are companies who produce passive, on-demand entertainment experiences such as Netflix, HBO, etc. My personal preference is towards entertainment that does not require additional effort. The more that companies such as Secret Cinema can draw consumers (such as myself) out of their homes into immersive experiences, the better (even if, at times, it means consumers attend businesses other than SC). It is all about creating consumer habits.

This is a great article. Thanks for sharing. From a marketing perspective, I wonder whether Salesforce should compete in other markets. It seems as if their focus is solely on the United States and maintaining dominance in that market. Would their business be better served focusing on developed markets such as China and Europe? The artificial intelligence component of their product surely would be a breakthrough in any of these markets.

Thank you for sharing. This is a space that is ripe for innovation. One area in which I struggle, as some of the other reviewers have pointed out, is whether machine learning is truly a breakthrough, or if it is just one more step in a linear development model. How do we know when there is breakthrough technology that truly changes the game? I would love to know what other markets in which this will be applicable, and whether work is being done to make it affordable for low-income patients.
