Great note! I’m fascinated by 3-D printing – I find it so incredible that Adidas wants to become the global leader of 3-D printed shoes. Given the footwear industry’s constant search for innovation, I can envision customized footwear as the future. However, I wonder how close are we this? Another factor that I think is also currently limiting is the ability to 3-D print using soft materials.

This is an extremely interesting note! In addition to your points, I think that it will be interesting to see Knewton’s impact on student motivation levels. By this I mean that its adaptive teaching method might incentive students to work harder to get the right solutions, in order to avoid longer teaching sessions and additional homework materials to fill-in their knowledge gaps.

Really interesting post! I love El Bulli – there are rumors that they will re-open next summer! I find it very exciting that artificial intelligence and machine learning have barely penetrated the food / gastronomy industry. What is clear is these new technologies currently only make sense for businesses that fortunately have the sufficient money to invest in them (i.e. high-luxury restaurants). Yet, I wonder how much of an advantage this would actually give them – wouldn’t they be better off investing the capital in better customer service or more exotic ingredients? Also, how much of the “art” would it take away from the whole experience?

I agree with so many of the points you make! I would also argue that it’s important for LEGO to innovate its product offering via digitization given the rapidly increasing use of 3-D printing techniques. Today’s 3-D printers are able to print LEGO pieces that look and function exactly like the real ones. And as 3-D printing becomes more common and cheap, LEGO will face the threat of people easily printing their own toys at home. In the light of this new technique soon taking over the toy industry, I agree that this shift towards open innovation is necessary for LEGO to remain competitive.

This is a great post! I think it’s fascinating to see how artificial intelligence could potentially lend itself to basically anything. Regarding your closing remarks – I think that it would be amazing to see an algorithm designing the “perfect beer” based on consumer feedback. Yet, as you mentioned, I do think that there is a big “creativity” / “artistic” factor that makes people’s relationship to beer so strong, especially nowadays with the increasing demand for more artisanal / craft beers.

This is very interesting, Jeannie! Echoing the comments above, I wonder if Spotify will eventually enter the larger media playground in order to remain competitive. From what I’ve read, Spotify has been struggling from a cash perspective for several years now, so I don’t think they have the capacity to invest in their own music content or video. My guess is that they will need to partner up with another firm to do so.
