Abstract: Many researchers have looked at potential reductions in the demand for labor caused by automation. I will describe some of the issues considered in this literature, along with some novel observations. I will also consider future changes in the supply of labor due to demographic forces. These supply-side issues turn out to be quite important, and inject whole new set of issues into the debate.
